Researchers fear North Dakota erionite will lead to mesothelioma epidemic did in Turkey
Michele Carbone of the University of Hawaii Cancer Center (which recently received $3.6 million from an anonymous donor, to support mesothelioma research) has spent much of his career working with three mesothelioma-stricken towns in Turkey.
Years of research led the doctor and his team to the conclusion that erionite in rocks used to build villagers’ homes was the cause of the towns’ astounding mesothelioma mortality rates. Ed Yong provides the following figures to demonstrate the abnormality of the Turkish communities’ plight:
“Since the 1970s, this rare type of cancer has been responsible for almost half of all the deaths in three villages – Tuzkoy, Karain and Sarihidir. For comparison, in 2008, the disease only accounted for 0.4% of deaths in the UK.”
Now Dr. Carbone is worried about people in towns nowhere near Honolulu or Karain. In Dunn County, North Dakota, there is naturally-occurring erionite in the gravel paving over 300 miles of road. Carbone and fellow researchers had cause for concern, and their findings in a recent study validate those concerns:
“Airborne erionite concentrations measured in ND along roadsides, indoors, and inside vehicles, including school buses, equaled or exceeded concentrations in Boyali [an erionite-rich town in Turkey], where 6.25% of all deaths are caused by MM [malignant mesothelioma].”
However, there was some good news:
“With the exception of outdoor samples along roadsides, ND concentrations were lower than those measured in Turkish villages with MM mortality ranging from 20 to 50%.” This does not mean that North Dakotans should assume they are safe, however—the physical and chemical properties of erionite from Turkey and ND are “very similar, and they showed identical biological activities.”
Dr. Carbone writes, “We hope that the lessons learned from such experiences will help to prevent a possible new wave of [malignant mesothelioma] in the United States that could be caused by erionite.”

Mesothelioma may be caused by exposure to ultramafic rock
Everyday exposure to naturally occurring asbestos increases the risk of developing malignant mesothelioma, according to a study by UC Davis researchers.
The study - the largest to examine the question - will be published this fall in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.
Exposure to asbestos in the workplace, particularly in shipyards, has long been recognized as a risk factor for mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer affecting the lining of the lung. But in the new study, researchers found a consistent and dose-dependent association between mesothelioma and residential proximity to ultramafic rock, the predominant source of naturally occurring asbestos.
"Our findings indicate that the risks from exposure to naturally occurring asbestos, while low, are real and should be taken seriously," said Marc Schenker, professor and chair of the UC Davis Department of Public Health Sciences and the study's senior author. "This study provides important supportive evidence that naturally occurring asbestos causes mesothelioma - and public efforts should now shift to understanding the risk and how we can protect people from this preventable malignancy."
To put the mesothelioma risk in perspective, the disease kills about the same number of Americans each year as passive smoking. About 2,500 people a year die from mesothelioma in the United States, according to National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health statistics. About 3,000 deaths a year are attributed to exposure to secondhand tobacco smoke, according to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency statistics.
Ultramafic rock is distributed throughout the Sierra Nevada, Coast Ranges and Klamath Mountains in Northern and Central California, and has been a source of increasing concern as new housing developments cut through these areas. Of most concern are the areas of ultramafic rock associated with tremolite asbestos.
In their ambitious study, Schenker and his colleagues used California Cancer Registry data to identify 2,908 cases of malignant mesothelioma diagnosed between 1988 and 1997 in adults ages 35 and older. In most cases, the registry also provided occupational history. As a control group, an equal number of age- and gender-matched pancreatic cancer cases was selected (since pancreatic cancer has no known association to asbestos exposure). For both the mesothelioma and pancreatic cancer cases, the researchers employed sophisticated geographic information system mapping to pinpoint home or street addresses for every diagnosed individual. A map from the California Department of Conservation, Division of Mines and Geology, served as the reference for ultramafic rock deposits. Finally, statistical adjustments were made for sex, occupational asbestos exposure and age at diagnosis.
The researchers found that the risk of developing malignant mesothelioma was directly related to residential proximity to a source of ultramafic rock. Specifically, the odds of having mesothelioma fell by 6.3 percent for every 10 kilometers (about 6.2 miles) farther a person lived from the nearest asbestos source. The association was strongest in men, but was also seen in women. No such association showed up in the pancreatic cancer group. The study was not designed to determine the "ground zero" risk for those living closest to an asbestos source - only to test for a relationship between proximity and risk.
"This is very creative, painstaking epidemiology," said Jerrold L. Abraham, professor and director of environmental and occupational pathology at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, New York, and a leading authority on mesothelioma. "The UC Davis researchers have shown a significant association between living near deposits of naturally occurring asbestos and mesothelioma. This is the strongest evidence possible without conducting one-on-one interviews with each diagnosed mesothelioma patient or his or her family."
Laurel Beckett, professor and vice chair of the UC Davis Department of Public Health Sciences and a study co-author, said the findings are important. "We showed that breathing asbestos in your community is not magically different from breathing asbestos in an industrial setting. It would have been a surprise to find otherwise."

Rsre work technique linked to artist's mesothelioma cancer death
A SCOTS artist who died earlier this month had a rare cancer normally caused by asbestos.
It's thought the clouds of dust James Howie worked in may have led to his death.
The Dundonian used an unusual technique of sanding down layers of paint to create his distinctive landscapes.
His cause of death was given as pulmonary embolism - a blocked artery to the lungs - and mesothelioma, which is a cancer usually found among shipyard workers exposed to asbestos.
Last night, his 74-year-old widow Joyce said: "He had mesothelioma, which he could have contracted at any time during his work.
"He used to do layer upon layer of paint, always scraping, sanding, cutting it back to paint over it again and again in order to create a certain effect.
"He would keep repeating this process until it resulted in the thing he was looking for. Although we have the death certificate, we're still awaiting the results of a final autopsy."

Hawaii Researchers’ Efforts to Crack Mesothelioma Code Aided by $3.5m Gift
Michele Carbone, director of the University of Hawaii Cancer Center and his colleagues, have made a series of recent scientific breakthroughs in understanding the mechanism by which asbestos triggers mesothelioma, an aggressive cancer of the lining of the lung and abdomen.
In recognition of that groundbreaking research, an anonymous donor has given the University of Hawaii Cancer Center a $3.58 million gift to support mesothelioma research, the university announced this month. The gift is the second largest in UH Cancer Center history.
“Mesothelioma is a serious public health problem,” said Virginia Hinshaw, chancellor of the University of Hawaii Manoa. “We’re proud that Dr. Carbone’s team is leading the world in this area of discovery. This gift validates their efforts and will help them remain at the forefront of thoracic oncology research.”
Closely associated with inhaling airborne asbestos fibers, mesothelioma produces an aggressive type of tumor. The current median survival from diagnosis is just 12 months, creating a need for more effective therapies to extend mesothelioma patients’ lives. Approximately 2,500 to 3,000 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with mesothelioma each year. Most were exposed to asbestos decades before cancer symptoms appeared.
Dr. Carbone and colleagues including Assistant Professor Haining Yang and Adjunct Professor Giovanni Gaudino have studied asbestos-related disease for more than a decade, analyzing how genetics, environmental carcinogens and viral infection interact to cause malignant mesothelioma.
In an article in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Carbone and colleagues described how asbestos killed cells through a process called programmed cell necrosis that leads to the release of a protein molecule HMGB1. People exposed to asbestos have elevated levels of the protein in their blood. The protein begins an inflammatory chain reaction in tissue that causes the release of mutagens that promote tumor growth. Cancer often occurs in the presence of chronic inflammation. By interfering with the inflammatory reaction, it may be possible to decrease the occurrence of mesothelioma.
Many of the UH researchers’ findings have been based on work conducted in the villages of Capadoccia, a region of Turkey that has an extraordinarily high rate of mesothelioma deaths. Nearly 50 percent of the region’s residents develop and die of mesothelioma from exposure to eronite, a naturally occurring mineral fiber found in rock formations that is even more toxic than asbestos. Eronite has been used in the U.S. in road paving.
Drs. Carbone and Yang plan to conduct a clinical trial co-sponosored by the U.S. National Cancer Institute in Cappadocia to validate the serum biomarkers they discovered for the early detection of mesothelioma.
Their findings may have applications far beyond the villages of Turkey and lead to new ways to prevent and treat the disease. In the future, treatment approaches aimed at identifying people who are likely to develop mesothelioma based on elevated biomarkers and blocking chronic inflammation could reduce the risk of mesothelioma among workers exposed to asbestos.

Without a current cure for mesothelioma, patients battling the cancer often want to fight it in every way possible. Nutritious eating is a wonderful way to instill mesothelioma hope and equip the immune system with positive fuel. The food and nutrients that we put into our bodies greatly affect our ability to heal and fight disease. Eating a balanced diet consisting of whole grains, proteins, dairy, fruits and vegetables enables the body to function properly and adequately fight infection and illness. Eating nutritious food while actively fighting mesothelioma through treatment may not cure the cancer, but fighting the disease from every angle will give patients the best possible outlook.
